Video

This interesting video gives a tour of the original Jewish ghetto in Venice. The narrator in the video describes the ghetto as very small and enclosed on all sides save the entrances. These ghettos where very important to Venetian culture because of the large role it played in Venetian economy. This is due to the fact that Venetians needed easy money to borrow. However, as Christians, most Venetians did not see money lending as a moral business, so the Jews had no choice but to take the jobs. Shylock serves as an example of such a usurer who loaned money to the Venetians because, as a Jew, he had no other choice. This video effectively shows the urban culture of the past. Although such structures exist today, they serve mostly as memorabilia of the past. The connection to modern-day Venice serves as a contrasting connection due to the end of such practices.

I thought connecting Shylock to Venetian's culture was a good idea, but you also presented material that contrasts the two ideas.
Do you find this valuable?
